PRESENT HIS VISION FOR THE HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful

April 19 through July 20, 2008

RENO, NV – The Nevada Museum of Art (NMA) presents Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful, an exhibition showcasing Wright's skill in creating harmony between architectural structure and interior design while fulfilling the needs of a modern lifestyle.  During his remarkable 70-year career, Frank Lloyd Wright was committed to the development of a truly American style of architecture and to the creation of furnishings and accessories that enhanced the surroundings in his revolutionary spaces. Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful presents more than 100 original objects including furniture, metal work, textiles, drawings, publications and accessories from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and other collections. This is the first exhibition dedicated to Wright's decorative and graphic designs since the 1970s.  Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful will be on exhibit at the NMA from April 19 through July 20, 2008.

The phrase "house beautiful" was coined in the early 20th century to refer to a principle of architectural and social reform which proposed that quality of life could be improved by designing one's material environment.  Frank Lloyd Wright's fascination with this ideal was apparent early in his career when he designed the book titled The House Beautiful, and it remained central to his architectural philosophy throughout his career.

This exhibition is divided into three themes that represent the methods by which Wright practiced the philosophy of the "house beautiful." Each section is presented through period and contemporary photographs of Wright interiors to provide context for the original objects on view. The first section introduces how Wright sought to develop a modern interior reflective of a uniquely American spirit of democracy and individual freedom. The next section illustrates Wright's development in integrating the space with furnishings and architectural elements. Finally, the exhibition explores his experimentation in bringing these ideas to the homes of average Americans.

Wright believed families would benefit from living in a tasteful and well-designed house. Examples of metal work, leaded glass windows, furniture, light fixtures, drawings, textiles, publications and accessories, and photographs of home interiors combine to tell the story of Wright's contributions to modern American life.  Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful presents a philosophy for creating interiors that radiate a sense of inner beauty and modern spirit.

The NMA is the last stop for Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful.  The national tour included installations at the Naples Museum of Art in Florida, the Boise Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, and the Philbrook Museum of Art in Oklahoma.

This exhibition is presented as part of the NMA's Art + Environment exhibition series, an initiative that brings community, artists, and scholars together to explore the interaction between people and their environments.

Interior Design Legislation That Impacts You

Join IDCC Now!!

Support Senate Bill 1312

  • The interior design profession has grown-up over the last few decades.  Many interior designers provide complex design services requiring in-depth education and experience with local, state and federal safety, health and welfare codes.

  • We are currently the only design profession in the built environment that is excluded from being regulated for competency in California. Although California has a certification process through a non-profit organization, this does not provide formal oversight and enforcement by the State.

  • Interior designers in California are impacted by a nuance in the newly adopted International Building Code (IBC) regulations which refers to "registered design professionals." Unfortunately, this distinction will preclude many qualified interior designers from performing services within a specific scope of work.  "Certified Interior Designers" are not recognized by the IBC because Certification just regulates a Title, instead of the Scope of Work of a Practice Act. Senate Bill 1312, sponsored by Senator Leland Yee, does just that.

  • The Coalition has worked hard and listened on our "Listening Tours" to ensure that anyone who wishes to become an "RID" will have the appropriate time necessary to take those steps.  At the same time, interior designers who provide "non-code related services"  would not be harmed or hindered in any way, and would be able to continue to use the term "interior designer."

Senate Bill 1312

  • Establishes the Practice and title of "Registered Interior Designer" in order to safeguard life, health, property and to promote the public welfare.

  • Sets education, experience and examination requirements for qualification as a Registered Interior Designer. The examination requirement, the NCIDQ, meets standards found in the California Business and Professions Code, and is used in all other states.

  • Provides for a fee-based registration process by modifying the current Board of Architecture to become the Board of Architecture and Interior Design, and establishes disciplinary and enforcement actions within the Board.

  • "Grandfather's-in" interior designers and Certified Interior Designers with education and/or experience, and provides a four-year window for them to prepare and qualify for registration through the new process.

The Interior Design Coalition of California Presents Practice Act Legislation

Senator Leland Lee, PhD, is the author, and the Coalition has been able to secure many co-authors to support this action. The Practice Act incorporates exemptions, grand parenting and licensing for interior designers. Presently interior design is the only profession in the built environment that is excluded from licensure.
